Kottke on Podcasting
Jason Kottke had an interesting post about podcasting and how new media is acting more like old media.
Podcasters have been slower to break out of the mold provided by talk radio. The playing of music before segments and as transitions between segments makes some sense on the radio, where it’s used in some cases to fill airtime. But for podcasts, there’s no need to fill airtime with anything but content.
This is very interesting and I can only agree with him. It’s the truth that people don’t understand the new media of podcasting. The people who are making podcasts are treating the new medium like it’s the old medium. Some of the people, like Leo Laporte, are old media mavens who have embraced the new technology, but I think that podcasts and video podcasts give people a chance to be “old media.”
I remember when I was younger, I would take a couple of tapes and an old boombox with a microphone and I would be my own DJ. I would intro the songs and then play them and in those days it was a blast. I believe that podcasters are re-living a similar experience. Who hasn’t wanted to be a news anchor (Peter Jennings was my personal hero in 3rd grade) or a radio DJ (my wife can’t stand my DJ voice)? I know that the new medium has created that opportunity for me.
So while I know that Kottke is correct. Podcasters don’t need to create their shows according to old media standards, I believe that’s half of the fun.

Miffed
In my previous post, I reffered to Esther and I creating audiocasts. For those who don’t know, audiocasts are the same things as a “podcast” (â„¢ or © or ®, not sure which).
Everyone on the web has been writing about Apple’s recent move to own the word podcast by sending a C&D letter to PodcastReady and having followed this event, I am a little miffed.
I think Dave Winer has it right:
“Apple has been coasting on other people’s work, as well as contributing their own, but they’re not very generous when it comes to sharing the credit. I’d be inclined to work with them on this, and other things, if they would be kind to us and our creations. Instead Apple sneers at the people who gave them this innovation, and sends demand letters to members of the community.”
If you didn’t initially create the concept, the you just have to suck it up. I’m sorry Apple, you might be the dealer of cool when it comes to portable audio and computer design, but in this instance, you are not cool.
Casting …
Esther and I have recorded our first audiocast, but since I forgot my powercord at work, I’m stuck waiting until tomorrow to upload it. Bummer.
After recording, getting it edited together and saving, we made a Walmart run, usually what Esther likes to do when she’s bored. While wondering through the electronics isles, I found a great deal on an ipod attachment from Belkin.

Belkin creates a voice recorder for the iPod, specifically for a 3rd generation one, which is great, because that’s what Esther has. The idea behind us buying it was that we can now create mobile audiocasts. (It’s weird that we are planning on doing mobile audiocasts with interviews before we have gotten our first one published … ambition?)
Tomorrow we should have a audiocast posted. Over the weekend we might also be transitioning both of our blogs to a Wordpress.org install. This should get us ready for blogging, audiocasting, and videocasting.
Podcasting Problems
Esther and I posted a couple of times from the lake, but they never appear. I think they are stuck in internet limbo… I hope that I can figure out how we can post before Saturday. I’m going to try G-cast. Check out podcast.jeredb.com for more information.
For real podcast update (on our backup system) check out: http://www.gcast.com/u/jeredb/main.
Make sure to click on the “posts” button in the player to hear all the audio.
More Podcasting News
I’ve put out another podcast… it’s kinda fun. It’s going to be listed on iTunes in the near future which will be awesome and what’s even better is my mom said I have a nice radio voice!
