Macbook vs. iPhone

I posted about my wishes for the iPhone 2.0, and I didn’t think that wish list would come in handy so quickly. I have had issues with my Macbook, Merlin, recently, it would not recognize the battery at all. Even with the battery in, when it was plugged in, would restart. I assume this is because the battery was trying to take over. The Macbook operated as though the battery did not exist, even though I had a brand new battery.

I took Merlin to a Genius bar. The Genius said that I should send it in. Today, I finally had a chance to. Which means I am operating on my work laptop or my iPhone.

I was going to attempt to use just my iPhone for everything. Email, web surfing, even podcasts. It would be all possible if… the iPhone had copy and paste.

iPhone Copy and Paste from lonelysandwich on Vimeo.

To blog, I write and then copy and paste text to make it more coherent. Conducting some of the day to day business (web surfing), I need to have copy & paste. That and the ability to use the horizontal keyboard everywhere.

Collecting defunct Apple products

apple hifi So I’ve decided to take up a new hobby. Collecting the unloved Apple products in this world. I picked up an Apple HiFi from a friend for super cheap. I will be the first to admit it was really over priced. The one part of the Apple announcement that most people missed was the end-of-life of the HiFi. It is no longer in the Apple store and is probably completely discontinued. I think this leads to a very interesting niche market, collectors and Apple fetishists.

The Newton was ahead of it’s time, and now has cult status. The NeXT cube is definitely a collectors item. The elusive Pippin is a popular find among the devoted. Does this mean 20 years from now people are going to see the HiFi as a quaint attempt to muscle in on the accessory manufacturers?

One can only hope that eBay is still around then…

A new love for open source

Alright, so I didn’t post the photos, I didn’t even take the camera. Crud! I’m trying to get back on the blogging band wagon, really I am.

Today, I have found a new love the open source software. Our MS Exchange server bombed out sometime around noon today and we have been without email for the past 4 hours. Word has come that they are on the horn with Microsoft, but they don’t really know what is wrong. The interesting thing about Open Source versus proprietary is the possibility of getting a temporary solution up and going rather quickly on limited resources.

Seeing how most open source is free, an IT department could take an old beige box that has just enough horsepower, some software (Samba, Sendmail, Courier’s imap server, Apache, Squirrelmail, Spamassassin, ClamAV, openLDAP with PostgreSQL database as a backend, Thunderbird) and any flavor of Linux OS and you can have a temporary solution up and running in as much time as it takes to install everything or plug the box in and power it up if you are disaster ready.

I’m not trying to speak poorly of our IT department, but the entire School of Business has ground to a halt waiting for their email to come back up. We shall see how long it takes

Kerfuffle via video podcast

While I don’t have a video podcast, I watch a whole bunch of them. Over the weekend, a major uproar has brewed up, namely between Robert Scoble and the rest of the tech blogs on the web. Scoble interviewed Intel senior fellow Mark Bohr and scooped the gadget blogs about the 45 nanometer processor breakthroughs.

When the gadget blogs finally broke the stories, Scoble divulged that he had an video interview and when the gadget blogs didn’t really pay any attention, Scoble got pissed. He ranted, which I would have done too, but when you are essentially blogger #1, you really have to watch what you say.

TDavid at MakeYouGoHmm.com makes a very accurate not about the entire problem that Scoble has: He needs to edit!

I’m probably echoing what TDavid’s intent was, if Scoble would edit his shows, change camera angles, or just make them more interesting, I would still be a subscriber. When Scoble announced that he was making a video podcast, I signed up right away, but after episode 2, I started watching them on a very, very casual basis. Finally when my hard drive was filling up with the high def video podcasts, I had to make a decision. I watched two episodes, trying to see if I could get back in the swing, but after watching 30 minutes of Vassil Mladjov, CEO of Blogtronix, I had to pick myself up off the desk, wipe the drool away, unsubscribe from the podcast and then promptly deleting all of the accrued files.

I doubt Scoble will read this, but if he does: Edit your shows. I can’t spare 45 minutes. Give me a 10 minute bite and then the option of getting the raw stream. That would be fabulous.

Mac Wrap Up

After all of the Apple Technology Update was wrapped up, here is my summary.

  • Most of the stuff about the hardware and the iLife software is stuff that I already knew about. Not many revelations.
  • Apple Server stuff is crazy cool and I’m definitely going to set up some home server.
  • Podcast Producer is going to be amazing! I would love to get some hands on time with it.

Overall it was a good time, informative and I’m glad that I went.

Update IV

During lunch we got an over view of iLife 06, much of which I already knew. We were next treated to the huge 24″ iMac booting via bootcamp into XP, it was a wretched sight to see. After it finished booting we were treated to a working demo of parallels. Demo is a misnomer, it booted and we got to see it. I wish I had a larger hard drive. Some questions about cut and paste and file visibility, a lot the problems are solved in the newest version.

Change in presenter, going to server and storage technologies.

Dave Wapada (Wapata?) is presenting on Apple in Enterprise. Not just a mac backend, very different from a few years ago, so client agnostic. Also heterogeneity in the backend is important.

Whoa! Tons of details about server management and hardware, most of the stuff that I’m not really super up to speed on.

Hardware update!

So after talking to Dave Watanabe, an Airport Extreme, plus a USB 2.0 attached hard drive will work with Time Machine! That means Esther and I will have automated backups! Amazing!

Update III

Software

A little preview of some of the things coming in Leopard, Time Machine, which I will be looking forward to. Combine Time Machine with the Airport Extreme and some external drives, that kind of creates a network attached storage, with auto backup. There was a question about security. The answer was “It’s still in dev and there might be authentication, or you could wrap file vault around it, nice.

Spaces

Virtual desktop, yadda, yadda, yadda. VitueDesktop does it now.

Mail

Stationary (ARGH!) I hate stationary! Although, this is a better implementation. Notes! that’s what I’m looking for, that can revolutionize my personal productivity, especially with the ToDos, with the tighter iCal integration, wonderful!

iChat

iChat theatre!!! Can’t wait for that. That’s going to be so much fun. Imagine the video podcast possibilities. Screen sharing, now I can show my mom how to do things! iChat presentation. Nice! That will be perfect for helping the mother.

Dashboard

I created a Widget with DashCode Beta this morning, so this creates some new interesting possibilities.

Boot Camp

I asked about the boot camp costing, the answer was a great one. Like with iChat AV, if you are running the previous OS (Panther in iChats case, Tiger in bootcamps case) you will be charged. Whew!

More questions about bootcamp, compatibility and viruses and such.

Crap! Power issues

Apparently the column that I was plugged into didn’t have power running to it. So now I’m sitting away from the rest of the presentation trying to catch up.

Macbook – The machine I’m on. The most interesting part, serviceable harddrive, nice!

The magsafe and the sudden motion sensor, two things that are heavily emphasized. No word of the Smackbook

That’s it for the portables.

Questions about the LED backlight rumor… who knows

Vista via Bootcamp on a Macbook… should work with the bells and whistles.

iPods

Podcasting… very cool. Not much said… jokes about accessories

Airport Extreme

802.11n (just ratified)? All the normal stuff, will link later

<

p>Apple TV… er… iTV… no… Apple TV

There is a educational value to this? I guess so for video podcasts and such

Questions about the N upgrade, it will cost, apparently due to accounting practices…. eh.

People milling around. I find Michelle and Michael and a place to plug in

Introductions, Jack Burns, Account Exec for DC to Richmond.

Jason Bevins, the technical guy, Dave Wapada (?) Server guy.

Jason is giving an overview, a lot of financials, some stuff about the company, Apple is a debt free company, who knew.

Apple is becoming a recommended at more schools. They are also becoming really big in government and enterprise

Showing off about the Apple Stores (Michelle brags about the New York mothership). Apple is a $3.5 billion company in retail alone!

Showing off the product line.

Prosumer apps, more of the pro stuff coming into the consumer apps. “Is there a digital photo lab on campus?” Not here, apparently in the works.

OS, why the changes, who know, but they are saying Leopard in 2007 Spring.

Intel migration, no more powerPC (yup, my macbook). With the intel architecture, Mac is compatible with Windows natively, but they have always been able to connect and do the windows thing.

Bootcamp – Dual boot solution, who knows it (most of the group raises a hand. Parallels – Virtualization, mmmm. It comes from Apple that it’s fact, if you are doing graphics, Bootcamp. Back up Windows with Parallels very quickly. Crossover – Based on WINE, run windows apps without windows. VMware – Mac is now here, virtualization, just like the others.

Enough about windows

Mac Mini, small footprint, great for a small footprint. Taking a look around it, very nice as usual. (Look into for a home PC).

iLife 06, All the usuals, iphoto, iTunes, Front Row. – Small hiccup – Back up and running

Bonjour sharing, through itunes sharing, solution for pushing media around the house

BYODKM – I know the answer! ha ha

Of the people I know, I’m a real geek. Not a hard core, “I live in bash and love the command line” type, like the boys in IT, but I can hold my own in the shell. The other thing is that I’m an Apple fanboy. Again, not the type that has a widget telling them when they can part with their cold hard cash for an iPhone, but I do love the Apple.

The sad thing about this geek is that I don’t have the job or the budget to support me going out to any tech conferences like the Consumer Electronics Show or MacWorld. I am one of the many who gets to drool over the coverages via the web and rabidly hitting the refresh button so I can brag to my coworkers about products that they really don’t care about.

That being said, tomorrow is my MacWorld.

Apple is coming to campus to show off their wares and some of the wonderful new technology. Obviously not the iPhone but their is the promise of some Leopard sneak peeks.

I plan on blogging most of the event, taking some pictures and maybe even doing a little podcast/vidcast stuff.

In a related note, after beginning to talk with my supervisor about professional development objectives for this year, I looked into becoming an Adobe Certified Expert, so that’s what is in the budget. After I looked at Adobe, I started thinking about other companies that I deal with every day. The only other one would be Apple, both at work and home. Apple had a certified technician program that I think I’m going to not just research, but doing. It’s only 150 dollars for the test, with a three day course, which I’m sure is more expensive, but that is something I’m going to do this year.

Tomorrow is my Macworld – hooray!

My squirrels

Most of yesterday, I was working on setting up a MySQL (My squirrels, ha ha!) database on my Macbook. It was a very long and slightly painful experience. OS X has a build in MySQL database, but getting to access was very very difficult, something about socket errors. Finally this morning, 5 minutes before walking out the door, it worked. I was using CocoaMySQL as a gui front end and it was being very janky. Finally I used the official MySQL gui front end and it worked like a champ. I think it just needed some time to think about it.

So what is all this MySQL talk about? I have found the wonders of Ruby on Rails. I am exploring using it to create some small web apps both personally and professionally. To be honest the professional one is a lot more involved, and I’m currently in the process of roadmapping it out. I’m not going to say much more about it until I have some more pieces in place.

For those who don’t know, Ruby on Rails is essentially a rapid prototyping computer programming language. It’s super slick, yet very robust. Look for some progress reports on that in the future.

And Barbecue sauce!

Last night Esther and I went out to dinner at Chili’s, which was surprisingly good. A wonderful little thing that the Chili’s people do, is add a trivia to their little drinks menu. Most of the trivia I knew, but it was fun to read them to Esther. I had a sampler platter, including ribs and shrimp (at Esther’s request) and Esther had a steak and chicken Quesadillas. It was pretty good, and as I told Esther last night, the only time I remember eating at a Chili’s with with my grandmother. That of course let to Esther insinuating that she reminded me of my grandmother and that devolved into chaos (good chaos).

So why were we having a dinner out? Esther is kind of done with her semester. She presented a major paper yesterday and outside of a single final she is done! She has survived her first semester as a Ph.D. student, hoorah!

Also last night, I worked on getting the laptop and the media center PC all hooked up where I could use it as a real computer as well as the media center hub. I installed TightVNC on the PC and Chicken of the VNC on the mac, which is much better to use than Remote Desktop Connection, which locks the PC when I disconnect. I also setup Dynamic DNS updater to eventually allow me to access the computer anywhere without having to use Orb. Now I just have to figure out how to get around the router directly the PC.

Shuffle, shuffle

About 4 or 5 months ago, I had some issues with my ipod shuffle. I was working in the garden, and it just wouldn’t play. The amber and green lights would flash back and forth. I had a good idea that it wasn’t going to be good. After trying to do the traditional apple “five Rs”. But it wasn’t working. Esther and I found the apple contact information to have them send me a replacement and a few days later I got a replacement shuffle in the mail. All in all it was a good experience.

Today, however, Apple released the “iPod Shuffle Reset Utility“. Why, oh why could they not release this when they first released the shuffles. It would have made my experience that much better. Darn you apple!

Casting …

Esther and I have recorded our first audiocast, but since I forgot my powercord at work, I’m stuck waiting until tomorrow to upload it. Bummer.

After recording, getting it edited together and saving, we made a Walmart run, usually what Esther likes to do when she’s bored. While wondering through the electronics isles, I found a great deal on an ipod attachment from Belkin.

Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod®

Belkin creates a voice recorder for the iPod, specifically for a 3rd generation one, which is great, because that’s what Esther has. The idea behind us buying it was that we can now create mobile audiocasts. (It’s weird that we are planning on doing mobile audiocasts with interviews before we have gotten our first one published … ambition?)

Tomorrow we should have a audiocast posted. Over the weekend we might also be transitioning both of our blogs to a Wordpress.org install. This should get us ready for blogging, audiocasting, and videocasting.

The Return

I have my macbook back!

I spent all of last night working on getting all the software back on the machine. It’s been interesting being on a computer diet for the past 3 weeks. I’ve been checking my bloglines more at work and less at home. Over the weekends, I would read more (which is a change for me) and got out and did more. But I have to say, it is nice to have my computer back.

Even after only a few hours of shake down, I can tell that the work that I had done was necessary. The shop that I took it to changed out the main logic board (which has had a lot of problems on the macbooks) and the bezels around the keyboard and screen. The only thing that I have noticed is the mouse is not as “clicky”. The left side doesn’t have the distinctive click that the center does. That’s a trade off I’m willing to make.

Over all, the mac is back. Stay tuned for more things coming from Jeredb.com

iPod Shuffle off the mortal coil

new ipod shuffle

The new ipod shuffle unveiled today does not impress me. Apple’s “Its Showtime” event was really a big let down.

The movies… eh.

The new ipod… marginally impressive, 80 gigs, but the same ipod.

The “redesigned” nano… feh! You can spend $250 for an 8 gig nano or the same amount for the 30 gig ipod. While it’s the form factor you’re paying for, it’s also stupid.

The hardest pill to swallow, which apparently now you could, is the new ipod shuffle. The new tiny shuffle has an aluminum exterior, which I find interesting and rather snazzy looking, but lacks the USB function that my current shuffle does. That’s the whole point of the of the shuffle. You could throw a paper on there and retrieve it later, you could drop a program on there and get it later. Now, you have to have a dock.

While I find if extremely interesting how you can put the music on it and charge it all via the headphone jack, the lack of the dock if a little disturbing. And won’t the fact that you charge and transfer data from the same socket that you listen to effect the sound quality? Is there a risk of shock there?

Overall, “Its Showtime” was a underwhelming event.

So apparently an Apple store is opening up this Saturday in Norfolk. Norfolk is closer than the other apple store in the state. This is a bummer in one sense becuase I have turned over my lovely (yet broken) macbook to some “apple certified repair” shop. I would have much rather taken it to the real Apple store, but that wasn’t really an option.

But now that there is a store opening locally… Oh yeah… macbook goodness here I come.

“Man down … “

The Macbook is in the repair shop. I’m without my new toy. I am very sad right now…

It’s been giving me all sorts of problems. Random restarts, laggy harddrives… I’m hoping its going to be fixed soon.
