Ubiquitous capture now in beta

When I was a Windows user, circa 2000 - 2005, I dabbled with Evernote, a very good note aggregator. I only didn’t wholly embrace it because it was tied to a single computer, which locked me into two separate libraries. Sure there are ways to shuttle those files back and forth with USB drives, but I have a tendency to lose things that aren’t the size of a small lunch box (Not my iPod or iPhone yet).

Evernote is slowly releasing a beta of their product, which now has Mac support, a web interface and a syncing feature. The ability to access my clipped notes from the web makes this product a contender in my knowledge management system. I have tried Yojimbo, which syncs, but it requires me to have a .mac account –not a big deal– but when I loaded a few PDFs into the app, it turned as slow as molasses. Plus no built in web access, I would have to buy a separate app to get that to work (plus have an always on computer).

I have tried DevonNote, but the lack of features and syncing were no-go elements.

I have tried DevonThink and the price tag alone makes it hard to palette.

I have dabbled with Jounler, which is not really well suited for knowledge management. Journler is a journaling app and it does that very well, it can be formed into a knowledge manager, but I like to use an app for it’s intended purpose.

EagleFiler, SoHo Notes, MyNotes, KIT and NoteBook, all have some detractors, most of which I can’t remember why, but I have tried them all.

With IMAP, Email and web access, Evernote can now become my ubiquitous capture. I can access it from either of my computer, my iPhone, the web… that is pretty much the definition of ubiquitous capture.

Evernote looks to be a standout in the field. The potential upgrade of features including handwriting recognition, text recognition in photos, and voice notes all increase my excitement.

Take the tour to find out the rest of the features.
